The Journey to Battery Passports

The collective pursuit to make the energy transition a success requires cohesive standards and transparency across global supply chains. Battery Passports, or digital identifiers, are gaining traction as a beacon to achieving this.

At the recent SAFE Summit, Circulor’s CEO Douglas Johnson-Poensgen unpacked the transformative potential of Battery Passports and their pivotal role in shaping a greener future.

Key takeaways from Doug’s talk

Empowering Consumers Through Transparency

At its core, a Battery Passport signifies responsible and sustainable sourcing, offering visibility into a product's materials, production journey and carbon footprint. It’s a tool that shines a light on the deeper tiers of the supply chain to prove who touched what and when.

Imagine a unique QR code affixed to every car, akin to a VIN number, that reveals vital information to consumers about the battery's provenance and health, giving them the buying power through a simple scan.

This transparency not only enhances consumer trust but also instils accountability among industry players and policymakers, catalyzing a more sustainable energy transition.

Regulatory Imperative Across Geographies

Despite variations in global regulations, such as India’s battery policies, the U.S. IRA Clean Vehicle Tax Credit and the EU Battery Regulation all require proof of sustainable and responsible sourcing, with pertinent data converging to a unique identity that is publicly available.

This approach to providing batteries with a comprehensive identity that evolves over its lifecycle, facilitates efficient and safe pathways to second life and ultimately recycling, playing a pivotal role in fostering a circular economy.

Although Battery Passports being required for access to European marketplace by February 2027, the concept of extends beyond batteries. The EU’s next phase of mandatory Digital Product Passports (DPPs) to cover steel, aluminum, consumer electronics, and textiles.

Illuminating the Supply Chain

Circulor’s Battery Passport revolves around consolidating diverse global regulatory requirements and supply chain data into a consumable format.

Using blockchain technology, Circulor tracks the flow of physical materials as they change chemical and physical state from raw materials to final product, gathering primary data at every production step, connecting the supply chain. This aggregated data enables downstream organization to effectively manage their supply chains and a subset is extracted for Battery Passports.

At a macro level, this information is presented to regulators to substantiate tax credits or ensure compliance with regulations. On a micro level, consumers are empowered to make informed purchasing decisions that influence industries.

Beyond Theory

A leading European car manufacturer is poised to announce the first Battery Passports for vehicles coming off their production lines.

By fostering transparency, accountability, and consumer empowerment, Battery Passports have the potential to drive meaningful change in the transition to clean energy. Embracing the era of Battery Passports and the strategic opportunities they provide means that it is more imperative than ever to begin that journey today.
