For downstream manufacturers, tracking recycled materials and proving their use in final products is essential to verifying recycled content claims, meeting compliance requirements and unlocking the full advantages of circularity. Also, for recyclers, proving sustainable operations is a key differentiator in an increasingly competitive and regulated global market.


The EU Battery Regulation sets increasingly stringent targets for circularity. Minimum recycling efficiency and recovery rates, start in December 2025 for recyclers and from August 2028, economic operators – those placing the battery on the market – must prove increasing volumes of recycled cobalt, lithium and nickel. This proof of recycled content must then be incorporated into the Battery Passport.
